Makoto Ueno<\/strong> was born in a family of musicians \nin 1966 in Muroran, Japan. His grandmother and father were both organists in a \nlocal protestant church, and they exerted the first musical influences on \nhim.<\/p>\n\n

He left his home town at the age of 16, to study in \nthe West, first at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied \nwith Jorge Bolet, then continued at Mozarteum Salzburg with Hans Leygraf.\u00a0 In his formative years, Ueno also received \ninstructions and suggestions from such diverse artists as Mieczyslaw \nHorszowski, Gary Graffman, Edward Aldwell, Felix Galimir, Leon Fleisher, \nRosalyn Tureck, Andrzej Jasinski, Radoslav Kvapil, Jacob Lateiner, Ruth Laredo, \nSeymour Lipkin among others.<\/p>\n\n

In addition, the writings and musical thoughts of \nHeinrich Schenker, Wilhelm Furtw\u00e4ngler, Artur Schnabel, Edwin Fischer, Sergiu \nCelibidache, Alfred Brendel, Glenn Gould, though they are immensely different \nfrom each other, influenced him in his early years. <\/p>\n\n

He was a prize-winner at various international \ncompetitions such as Maryland,\u00a0 B\u00f6sendorfer=Empire(Brussels), \nGeneva, Orl\u00e9ans. In Japan, he was a recipient of the Kyoto City Prize for New \nArtists, and of the Aoyama Barocksaal Prize, in 2005.\u00a0 In the same year, he won the Second Prize at \nthe 1st Sviatoslav Richter International Piano Competition in Moscow.<\/p>\n\n

Although Ueno usually plays modern concert grand \npianos, he is equally at home with historical instruments. He often performs on \nViennese and British fortepianos from 1800~1850, and on Pleyel, Streicher, \nErard, B\u00f6sendorfer pianos of 1840~1900. <\/p>\n\n

Ueno has been very active in the field of CD \nrecordings in recent years, especially using original instruments of the 19th \nCentury and early 20th Century. Many solo recordings have been released by \nOctavia Records and Wakabayashi Koubou labels. <\/p>\n\n

His latest solo CD releases include a disc of Chopin \nSonatas (2013) with a Pleyel made in 1846 and an Erard made in 1852, a \nrecording of Rachmaninoff and Debussy(2013), played on an American Steinway \nmade in 1925, an album of Liszt works(2014) with an Erard made in 1852, a disc \ndedicated to the works of Wagner=Liszt, Debussy, Scriabin, Schoenberg, and \nRavel(2016), played on a historic Bechstein E270 made in 1906, a recording of \nDebussy and Ravel(2017), with a special Erard with extended 90 keys made in \n1927, and a Brahms recording(2019), with a Streicher made in 1846 and a B\u00f6sendorfer \nmade in 1903. <\/p>\n\n

Also several recordings of chamber music by \nMoscheles(2014), Czerny(2015), Beethoven(2018), and Weber(2019), with flutist \nKazunori Seo on Naxos have been released.<\/p>\n\n

A disc of Schumann Lieder composed in 1840, playing on \na Bechstein EN280 was also released in 2018. The future releases include a CD \ndedicated to the works for violin and piano by C. Franck, and a recording of \nChopin Etudes.<\/p>\n\n

In 2018, a project of performing the complete violin \nsonatas of Beethoven, using the original period instruments such as Mattaeus \nStein(attrib.), John Broadwood, and Conrad Graf, with violinist Yasushi \nToyoshima, was successfully completed to critical acclaim. <\/p>\n\n

A new project of performing the complete cello sonatas \nand variations of Beethoven, with cellist Noboru Kamimura, using the Viennese \nSchweighofer and Streicher pianos from the mid-19th Century, is planned in \nAutumn 2019.<\/p>\n\n

Since 1996, he has been teaching as a professor of \npiano at Kyoto University of Arts. In addition to his teaching at other \nJapanese universities and institutions, such as Toho Graduate School of Music, \nand Nagoya University of Music, he has served as a jury in major piano \ncompetitions in Japan and Europe, and written articles and essays for various \nJapanese music magazines. The most recent article was about a manuscript of \nFranz Liszt, published in November 2018.\u00a0 \nHe has given masterclasses in Korea, Thailand, Germany, Turkey, and \nPortugal. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
