Special Prize "D. Shostakovitch"

This prize will select one participant of the festival to perform with orchestra, in the Opening Concert of the festival, in Grande Auditório do Convento São Francisco, in Coimbra, on the 28th January 2023, the following concerto: D. Shostakovitch – Concerto nr. 1, Op. 35

The selection will take place by video, please check below the repertoire and the rules to submit your video recorded performances.

 

Selection Round - VIDEO (before 15th January 2023)

REPERTOIRE:
 
  • One virtuoso Etude of the participant´s own choice, among those of Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Prokofiev or Ligeti
  • One determinant free choice work

Maximum duration: 15 minutes

Final - VIDEO ( before 22nd JANUARY 2023)

6 pianists may be admitted.

Repertoire (max. 20 minutes):

Free choice program which must include one work composed after 1900.

Concert with Orchestra -PRESENTIAL (28th January 2023)

The winner must perform with orchestra, in the Opening Concert of the festival, in Grande Auditório do Convento São Francisco, in Coimbra, on the 28th January 2023, the following concerto: D. Shostakovitch – Concerto nr. 1, Op. 35

RULES

Special Prize “D. Shostakovich” 2023 will be by pre-recorded video submission (see “Video Recording Requirements” section below for all details). 

IMPORTANT: The jury reserves the right to select less finalists/prizewinners if the level of the performances is below the standard considered appropriate by the jury to perform as soloist with orchestra.

Video Recording Requirements

Competitors must send one (1) downloadable video link, to an email provided by the organization after a successful enrolment, complying with the requirements of each round and all the recording regulations.  The video must be sent respecting the following
deadline: January 10th 2023 (Selection Round) and January 19th 2023 (Final)

 By participating, competitors give to the Organization all rights regarding audio and video recordings, so they can be broadcasted with no financial compensation to the candidate.

The Organization must be able to easily download the original files to upload and stream them during the competition days. The contestant must use WeTransfer, DropBox, Filemail, Google Drive, OneDrive or similar when sending the video. YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, etc., links will not be accepted.

The video must be unpublished and must have been recorded after December 15, 2022. To ensure that the recording has been
made specifically for the competition, competitors have to say “Coimbra World Piano Meeting” at the beginning of the video, before performing. The video recording does not necessarily have to be professionally made but it must have a good video and sound quality so it can be evaluated.

Duration of the files cannot exceed the timing requested. The total performance time must include the pauses
between pieces (if more than one is played). Files that exceed the allotted time will not be accepted.

Edited video recordings will not be accepted. The video must be taken in one shot, no interruptions during the entire performance are permitted or after the spoken presentation. The video must be made by one fixed camera and must show the keyboard and the musician in full view.

All compositions must be performed in whole. Works must be performed by memory.
However, single movements from a sonata, or single pieces from a collection, are accepted. Repeats will be left to the discretion of the competitor. 
The chosen pieces should be published musical works. If requested by the jury, the candidate should provide a copy of the score by email. Compositions and improvisations made by the participants are not allowed.

All participants must aknowledge that in case of winning the prize, they must be in Coimbra on the 27th and 28th January 2023, for rehearsals and concert with orchestra.
